I adore my mother. The meaning of her life is her four “babies” (fourth not pictured above). It has nothing to do with any kind of stereotype; she is not the typical mother by any means, but I have never seen a more loving and supporting mother and that includes fiction. To paint a picture, when I was young I once asked her in jest, “Mom, what would you do if I told you I had killed someone?” She got very quiet and thoughtful. Taking me quite seriously she replied, “I would be very concerned, but I would help you hide the body.” Creepy? Very, but you don’t get more supportive than that.
Which brings me to Mother’s Day. Every mother deserves a sweet treat for giving birth to you, loving you and being fabulous in her own way. Whether you hate her, love her or love to hate her, here is a list of gift ideas for every kind of Mama out there.

Mama Chef
For the mommy dearest who cooks, look into Jessie Steele's vintage-inspired, hostess and kitchen aprons that are influenced by the romantic visions of a bygone era. Designed in vibrant colors, flirty patterns and figure flattering shapes, these fine quality, retro-chic cooking aprons will make time in the kitchen even more fun. Once again, best if you don’t give this gift if you still live at home. Matching pot-mitt also available. Retail: $30; mitt, $6

My daughter came over last week and asked me a strange question, “Mom – why aren’t you quilting any more?” I had to stop and think about it. I’ve been sewing and quilting for as long as I can remember. I told her I was just too frustrated quilting at night when I get home from work. My eyes hurt … I just couldn’t concentrate. My biggest problem is dark thread on dark fabric. Not to mention threading the needle!
Well, for Mother’s Day I got the nicest, most thoughtful thing my daughter has ever purchased for me. She bought me an OttLite lamp. Not just any lamp, but the quilter’s dream lamp. It’s a floor lamp with a magnifier attachment and a clip that holds papers, thread, patterns, pictures. It’s like an extra arm. Plus, the head is so wide I can use it over my cutting table and my sewing machine.
The light is something that I can’t believe. I can actually see my navy blue thread on my navy blue quilt when I’m piecing everything together. Plus, I can tell what is black and what is navy. The best thing is my eyes feel so much happier. Now, I can come home from work, turn on some music, quilt and relax. My daughter is happy to see me quilting again and is going to buy another OttLite for her mother-in-law next month for her birthday.
